Yeah, it just takes some fiddling around with. My recommendation -- and this works for any version of Word -- is to first insert a random picture into your document (preferably a puff pic). Then, use the tool to practice tracing certain over the lines of the picture you've chosen.

The group-together thingy: if you select a bunch of items and "group" them together (as instructed), Word treats them as one clustered object.

For example, say you have three separate shapes: a circle, a square and a triangle. Now, say you wanted to make them all pink, and move them from one part of the page to another part. You could click each shape, turn it pink, then move them around individually. Or, you could group them together, and apply the formatting and the moving in one go.

For the most part, the group together option is a matter of convenience -- but definitely preference.
